Today we’ll talk about the types of IELTS Writing Task 1 questions that you must prepare for before your exam.

If you’ve been preparing for your Academic IELTS Exam, you’re aware that Task 1 is usually about numbers.

However, you need to be aware of all the possible question types, because you never know what you’ll see on test day!

Type #1: Change Over Time

This is usually presented as a line graph.

You will be shown data that changes over days, months or years. (Usually years!)

For vocabulary, you need interesting adjectives, adverbs and verbs that mean “increase/decrease + a lot/a little“.

Type #2: Static

This is usually presented as a table. It can also be a pie chart or bar graph.

You will be shown data for one point in time, usually one year.

For vocabulary, you need interesting adjectives and adverbs that mean “highest/lowest“.

Type #3: Maps

This is usually two maps, but sometimes it’s only one.

You will be shown a map of a town or building layout, most likely.

For vocabulary, you need interesting location descriptions, such as “top/bottom/north/south“.

Type #4: Nature Diagrams

The topics vary, but they usually reflect a natural process, such as the water cycle.

For vocabulary, you need to paraphrase as much as you can from the labels shown.

Type #5: Process

This is usually a flow chart showing a manufacturing process.

For vocabulary, you need to paraphrase as much as you can, and for grammar, utilize a mix of passive and active sentences.
