I’m sure you’ve heard us say that listening to podcasts is a must for IELTS preparation.

But, how, exactly, can you learn from them?

Of course, you’ll improve your listening comprehension, but there is so much more you could do with just one episode!

5 Steps for Using a Podcast for IELTS

1. Choose a podcast that is made for native speakers.

Stop using podcasts that are just made for students– except ours, of course!

I recommend On the Media– it is very informative, interesting, intelligent, and it has transcripts!

2. For improving listening skills, listen to the first half while simultaneously reading the transcript.

Then, listen to the second half with no transcript.

3. To improve Speaking Fluency, talk out loud for 5 minutes when you finish the episode.

Summarize the information you remember, and then react to the information. Talk about your feelings and opinions.

4. For more Fluency practice, read the transcript out loud.

As there are interview portions in On the Media, you could do this with a partner as well.

5. Learn new vocabulary!

Choose 3 new words from the episode and add them to your vocabulary notebook.

Incorporate this activity into your IELTS study plans 2 to 3 times a week, and you’ll make huge leaps in your English skills!
