So, in IELTS Writing Task 1, diagrams have been seen more often lately.

In fact, we had this question from a student who just took the exam:

I faced a rather unusual form in Task 1. There was given a diagram, how to make jam from fruit… They asked to summarize the information and compare where relevant. We were confused. I asked others and they wrote it like a recipe. 

This would look like a flow chart, called a process diagram.

So, here, divide the steps into two groups.

The biggest danger on these types of questions is using too much of the given vocabulary.

Paraphrase whenever possible. For example, you could say, ‘strawberries and raspberries‘ instead of ‘fresh fruit‘.

For your Task Achievement score, you have to present the information in an essay format, with paragraphs.

So, the students who wrote the information in a recipe format, like a list, they would get a very low score for Task Achievement.

Also, having bullet points is considered ‘inappropriate format‘- in General and Academic Writing Task 1.
