IELTS Energy 600: Listen to Luis for Beyond Band 7.5

Today you’ll meet 3 Keys’ student Luis, and learn how to go beyond band 7.5 on IELTS.

luis beyond band 7.5

Luis’s most recent scores were 8 in Listening7.5 in Reading, 7 in Writing and 7.5 in Speaking.

This is higher than what he needed for express entry into Canada!

Luis had taken the IELTS Exam before, but could not rise to an 8 in Listening.

So, he reviewed the strategies from the course, and began listening to more podcasts made for native speakers.

Unlike Reading, Listening is more about comprehension than strategies. So, native speaker podcasts are a must!

Luis recommends High Performance Habits, which is an audio book, and the podcast Something You Should Know.

Increasing his Reading score to a 7.5 was mostly about the 3 Keys’ strategies, but he also followed Twitter for USA Today, and checked this every morning before work, and then throughout the day when he had time.

Then, Luis managed a 7.5 in Speaking, although he does not think of himself and social, and found that a challenge.

To do this, after learning the strategies, he put them into practice by speaking to his wife in English as much as he could.

His wife is more outgoing and expressive, so she gave him tips on how to do more of this. They worked on his Spanish intonation first, and then transferred these skills into English.

You can find your own Speaking role model on YouTube, and mimic this person.

So, how did Luis manage his Writing 7? By following the 3 Keys’ study plan, learning the strategies and tips by heart.

Then he wrote out his own template by choosing the transition phrases he felt comfortable with from the course.

Following this, of course, he practiced his essay template a lot! He timed himself sufficiently before the exam.

A final writing tip is to not improvise on the exam, and don’t make it complicated.
