Today we discuss a candidate case study and his rookie mistakes, so you don’t repeat them on your next IELTS Exam!

A listener wrote in about his scoring issues and preparation problems:

I have participated in the IELTS Exam and my score was 4.5 [on Reading], because the teachers didn’t have a plan about what you’ll do to avoid the IELTS Exam tricks and their ideas were just to practice a lot to get your score.

Firstly, a 4.5 is quite low, which tells me that this student’s reading comprehension is not good enough yet for the IELTS Exam.

Yes, some teachers do not teach strategies for passing the Reading Exam, but, you have to have a high-level of reading comprehension in order to use those strategies.

Now, if you’re in an IELTS class and the teacher is not imparting the test strategies for finding the answers quickly, get out of the class!

He continues:

There were more than 15 students in the class, and just one got a score of 5.5. I made a mistake, by incorrectly transferring the answers from the Reading passage sheet to the answer sheet because I postponed that until the end of the exam. I didn’t have the strategy for answering as much as I could before I ran out of time.

So, you have to know the test!

In Listening, you have 10 minutes to transfer your answers, but not on Reading!

Thus, don’t even bother writing your answers in the test booklet for Reading. Just write your answers directly on the Answer Sheet as you go.

Furthermore, yes, you have to have time-saving strategies for finding all 40 answers in 60 minutes!

Finally, the student writes:

The other problem was Listening Section 4. It was the hardest one I’ve ever experienced.

Listening Section 4 is tough! It’s only one speaker, and the topic is more specialized.

The Moth Radio Hour is fantastic! Put it in your study plan!
