Today you’ll learn how to write a sporty General letter to the editor for the IELTS Writing Exam.

Even if you’re not a General training candidate, today’s episode is excellent for encouraging creative and enjoyable brainstorming for essays.

We had a post from a student who had recently taken the exam:

I just came back from a test in Toronto, Canada. The Task 1 question was very different. It asked you tell about your company not promoting an annual sporting event. I had problems because it seemed to be a publishing thing. They ask in the question to explain to the community why the sporting event won’t happen, and why sporting events are a good thing for the community. Very confusing. Can you please help me?

At first glance, it does seem specialized, like in the field of publishing.

However, no General Training letter will require specialist knowledge. Just focus on the 3 bullet points you need to address.

In order to answer this, you must very inventive and creative.

First, you need to come up with a context.

Why can’t we promote this event?

Maybe our funding fell short, or we’re not able to publish this promotion this month because we have to promote something else.

Imagine yourself in the position of the person writing. Get specificname your company, and the sporting event.

For instance, “I represent a local taco chain, called Dos Amigos, and, initially we had promised to donate towards your marathon to be held in March. Unfortunately, we are promoting our own sporting event that month and well not be able to co-promote two competing sporting events simultaneously.

Details are huge here. We encourage you to have fun with this!

Why won’t the event happen?

You could say, “We’ve just received a forecast from the local weather station, and apparently a hurricane is supposed to land that weekend.”

Or, maybe you’ll be too short-staffed, so, “A high-level CEO in our company is retiring that weekend and we’ve already scheduled an enormous party, so nobody can work.”

Why are sporting events good for the community?

This is easier- they promote good health. To be more specific, “As you know, there was a recent report released stating that third graders have increased in weight by 10 pounds in the past 5 years, and we, at Dos Amigos, believe that every child needs to be healthy for their future.

Yes, you can invent fake research!
