Video: Is There a Dress Code for IELTS?

Today I’ll talk about the rules regarding how you dress on the day of your IELTS test.

In a class I taught yesterday, I had a student ask me about the dress code for sitting the IELTS Exam.

Apparently, she had an IELTS teacher tell her that she had to wear closed-toe shoes.

She did this on her last exam, and the pain in her feet, because of these restrictive shoes, ended up distracting her on the test.

You don’t want this to happen!

No- there is no specific dress code for IELTS candidates. You should dress in clothes that are comfortable, so you will feel good over the many hours you are taking the exam.

You can even wear cool-looking tennies, trainers or sneakers. However, having said that, you still want to dress respectfully.

Don’t, for instance, rock up to your Speaking Exam in a stained t-shirt or an old hoodie. This is not appropriate, and, I feel, disrespectful to the examiner.

Additionally, we have a phrase in English: Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Thus, dress in clothes that help you to feel confident. Looking good can also help us feel strong!
