What Are the Common IELTS Part 1 Topics?

Recently, a subscriber to our YouTube channel asked this question, to prepare more efficiently for her next exam.

I remember when I used to teach IELTS in a language school, and we’d always start out by discussing the “hot” topics.

These were subjects which were said to be the most common on the exam.

The fact is, though, that IELTS comes up with new question booklets, including new, random topics, every few months.

So, today, let’s talk about likely topics, that are often seen, and then we’ll look at some odd ones.

That list is misleading, though, because within each of those very broad subjects is a whole host of possibilities.

Let’s take ‘food‘ as an example.

You may be asked about your breakfast habits, your cooking experience, desserts you enjoyed as a child, or, perhaps, just fruits and vegetables.

My point is that you can’t prepare for, or know, the exact questions you’ll get on the test.

The best preparation is to talk out loud to yourself every day, and vary the discussion.

You can talk about what you did today, and also a news article you read, or a memory that just occurred to you from the past.

Prepare for fluency, not just specific questions!
