I love comic books. I have for years! So, I wanted to share some of my personal passion with you, and explain how these series can really prepare you for IELTS success.

The fact is, comic books are an art form. They provide reading practice, yes, but they also broaden your perspective on storytelling and culture.

These series I recommend today are actually called graphic novels, not just comic books. This means they are written for a mature audience.

1. Transmetropolitan, by Warren Ellis

This story features a rogue journalist in the future, named Spider Jerusalem.

Seeing this future world will encourage your fluent and creative responses to questions about the future on IELTS Speaking and Writing.

Reading this series will also provide native, impressive vocabulary related to news and media, as well as, of course, the future.

2. Fables, by Bill Willingham

This is a fantasy-based series. It is about fairy tale characters, such as Snow White, who escape the evil in their world to come live in New York City.

These tales also provide a creative and unique perspective on Western myths and traditions.

The useful IELTS vocabulary you can learn here is based around travel, cities and storytelling.

3. Captain Marvel, by Kelly Sue DeConnick

This is a more classic super hero tale. Captain Marvel is a female superhero, who flies around space saving people and, sometimes, getting into trouble.

It may seem like a classic character, but, I assure you, this is modern and hilarious.

How will this help your IELTS readiness?

If there are questions about media/movies/TV and the prevalence of superheroes, this will give you something to talk about.

What is more, it will provide you with perspective and vocabulary about traditional and nontraditional gender roles.

So, choose a title, or author, and explore! You can find these online or, hopefully, at your local library.
