Video: Should You Use All Capital Letters on IELTS?

Today you learn about using all capital letters on your IELTS Exam.
all capital letters IELTS

A student recently asked about this in a Facebook Live broadcast, and I’ve been asked this many times before.

So, I know it’s a question on IELTS candidates’ minds!

This student asked if she’d be penalized for using all caps.

No, you won’t lose points!

You can write in all capital letters on Reading, Listening, and even Writing, and you will not be marked down at all.

If you have an issue about knowing which words to capitalize, then this is a good strategy for you.

You will be marked down for Grammar in Writing if you make capitalization mistakes, and your Reading and Listening answers will also be wrong if that mistake is made.

However, the capitalization rules are not very difficult to nail down.

We capitalize:

  • the pronoun I
  • the first letter of every sentence
  • the first letter of proper nouns, or names (of people, places, organizations, etc.)

Also make sure you are writing the letters correctly.

I’ve had students before who thought they were writing a capital ‘F’, for instance, but it was actually lower case.

Thus, if any of these problems apply to you, yes, it is a good strategy to write in all capital letters to avoid those mistakes.
