The informal vocabulary below can be used in an informal General Training Task 1 Letter, or on Speaking Parts 1 and 2.

The formal vocabulary can be used, of course, in formal letters, Writing Task 2, and Speaking Part 3.

 

 

Informal

1. That sucks/ that’s rubbish. (It’s terrible.)
2. It pains me to say that…
3. I’ve had it up to here. / I can’t take it anymore.
4. I’m freaking out/ going mental. (I’m panicking.)

Formal

1. Unfortunately, I am the bearer of bad news.
2. Forgive me for saying, but…
3. This is pushing the limits of acceptable behavior.
4. I must insist on certain changes being made / certain solutions being carried out.
5. Needless to say, the situation is dire.

Remember, you must use a wide variety of language, formal and informal, on the Speaking exam to get a high score for vocabulary.
