Today you’ll get high-scoring, native speaker idioms and slang to discuss sports on the IELTS exam.

Surprisingly, the topic of sports does pop up all over the IELTS exam.

You may have to talk about sports in Speaking Parts 1, 2, or 3. What is more, you may be asked about athletes or athletics on Writing Task 2, or even listen or read about sports on the other parts of the exam.

So, obviously, knowing some natural, native-speaker language is important!

  • Front-runner / Fair-weather fan– someone who only follows/likes a team if it wins
  • Underdog– person or team who is supposed to lose
  • Fanatic– (noun or adjective) to be really, really into something (even other than sports)

Do you not like sports? Remember that you still might have to talk about it. So, read an article about a team you are familiar with, perhaps the favorite of a friend or family member. Then, ask them to tell you about the team and why they like it.
