IELTS Energy 430: Listening Accent Anxiety

Do you have listening accent anxiety? The IELTS Listening Exam employs a wide variety of accents– including American, British, and Australian.

We recently had an email from a listener about the British accent:

A friend of mine told me about 3 Keys as an option to continue practicing and a way to increase my scores, especially my listening score. Before I paid, I called and talked with you and got some extra information before I paid for the full course. Now, I did the first Listening Module, and I noticed that Lesson 3 is based on the American accent, which, unfortunately, is not interesting for me because of my weakness in accents which will be demanded in the test. I’m afraid this course is really efficient but I’m not confident it will work well for me… There isn’t time to be dedicated to things which are directly related to my weaknesses. I’d like to know your opinion about the situation, and whether to continue or not.

First of all, yes, this person should continue in the course. It provides all the accents which are heard on the real exam.

Also, preparing for IELTS, is not just about test practice. You need a balance, such as that provided in our study plans.

There are resources there to practice British, Australian and American English, as well as all the test practice you need.

The lectures are in the American accents, as Jessica provides all the lessons.

For many students, as this is the easiest accent to comprehend, having the information and strategies delivered in this manner is more efficient than trying to decipher unfamiliar pronunciation.

The IELTS test practice itself in 3 Keys includes British, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and South African English speakers. Plus, there is a bonus which identifies some of the accents so you know what you’re listening to and can read along with the transcript if needed.

The fact is, you have to dedicate yourself to your practice and following everything on your study plan. It works! For instance, our student Dat recently got 9’s in Listening and Speaking, and overall 8.5.

Be critical, like this student, of the IELTS course you are choosing. Make sure you are able to ask the creators and teachers questions at any time.

Earlier in this student’s email, he’d told us he attended an IELTS course in Toronto, Canada. Knowing that that preparation course didn’t get him the score increase he needed should indicate a necessary change in preparation methods.
