I am tense with the question that I had in my real IELTS Exam today. Honestly I am so frustrated after such hard work that I couldn’t even recognize the essay type. The question was:
People in some countries rent for accommodation, whereas in other countries they prefer to own their own homes. Does renting a house have more advantages or disadvantages than having one’s own house?
If you receive a question like this, don’t get overwhelmed.
The first thing you should do is take time to understand the question. Then, underline the key words, or ideas, that must be in your essay.
There are a few ways you could organize this particular essay, but they still fit into the general idea of an argument template.
However, in an argument essay you write about 2 opinions on one topic. In this one, you’ll write about 2 different topics.
The key ideas that must be included are: renting, owning a home, advantages and disadvantages.
Depending on your opinion, you could write about advantages or disadvantages of renting in paragraph 2, and advantages or disadvantages of owning in paragraph 3.
