IELTS Energy 382: Introducing… Facebook Live (And Our Number 1 Reading Strategy)

Today we answer a listener question about reading, and share our number 1 reading strategy!

number 1 reading strategy

The biggest fear of mine when it comes to IELTS is the reading module. I actually cannot figure out the sequence of what to do first. Should I read the whole passage first, or just see the questions and start scanning for the key words? Either way I am unable to get the desired outcome.

What jumps out immediately to us is that this student needs a system. He needs a simple step-by-step strategy to get the reading answers.

On the reading exam, you do not have time to read the whole passage first.

That’s why you need strategies, because you’re not going to be 100% sure of your answers. You have to learn to trust the strategies.

This student is flailing right now, as you can see in the question.

Our 3 Keys Students are getting 8’s and 9’s on the Reading Exam, because they learn and trust our strategies.

What should you do first on the IELTS Reading Exam?

The answer is to skim.

The good news is that you already know how to do this. People often skim the newspaper, because they don’t have time to read every word of every article. I do this with the New York Times, when I just read the beginning of the article to find out if I want to read more.

Why should you skim?

This is not to find answers. This is to warm up your brain so you get the gist, or the topic of the article, before you look at the questions.

If you don’t do this, and, instead, go straight to the questions, you’ll have to read them a couple times. This wastes precious time!

  • Skimming wins the IELTS reading ! 70% of us can, but only 30% of us do. It takes a skill to warm up before diving into the Qs. 3 KEYS is the weak’s strength. It is the only true response to all tasks. SUCCESS is just one step away.
