I wanted to research what it’s like to surf the web as a student looking for IELTS material and help. So, I simply googled IELTS help, and what I found was shocking!
One of the first results that came up was a really weird site called Good Luck IELTS.
Red Flags for Bad IELTS Sites
Red Flag #1
- Lots of links to books to buy online.
- Many advertisements for other products.
- This means that this is an affiliate site. It was published to make money for the creator, as they get a share of all the products that you buy when clicking the ads on their site.
Red Flag #2
- Vague advice that does not link to specific scores. For example, on this site, it says, “Write in an organized way. Divide your writing into paragraphs.” This doesn’t tell you how to organize your essays, or how to utilize paragraphing. What’s more, there’s nothing about the IELTS scoring system.
- More advice on this dodgy site says, “Use simple, clear English to get your ideas across in a powerful way.” This is ridiculous! If you use simple English, this links to a 5 for grammar and vocabulary.

- In their Academic Task 1 section, the site continues, “Know what the key information is.” However, it doesn’t tell you what those numbers are, or how to choose them!
- This tells us that the actual IELTS material was most likely written by a general ESL teacher, and NOT and IELTS professional.
