IELTS Energy 360: What’s Up With Finding Information in Paragraphs?

Today we talk about the IELTS Reading question type of finding information in paragraphs.finding information paragraphs

We had a question from a student in our closed Facebook group for our IELTS course, and this prompted not only this episode, but also an additional lesson in our course!

The Reading question Matching Headings to Paragraphs is common on the IELTS Reading exam. Another question, though, is becoming common as well. This question looks similar to Matching Headings, but it is very different!

This question asks you Which Paragraph Contains the Following Information.

It differs from Headings because Headings are main ideas, found in the beginning and/or end of the paragraph. However, the Information question is about details.

The advantage here is that the possible answers in this question type contain very specific keywords which are easier to find.

So, using our strategy, underline the keywords in the statements, and then go paragraph by paragraph to scan for the keywords.

This takes a little more time than other question types. This is why it’s so important to follow time-saving strategies for other question types so you have an extra minute or two to look for these difficult answers.

One beneficial way to begin practicing difficult question types like this is to work backwards- we did an episode about this preparation strategy.

This method is useful for the very difficult question types of Y/N/NG, T/F/NG and Matching Headings.

  1. Write down the answers first.
  2. Analyze the answers for matching keywords and where the answers are located.

Above all, practice makes perfect!
