IELTS Energy 355: What’s the Writing Difference Between a 6 and 7?

Today we share with you guys some clues about what makes the difference between getting a 6 and getting a 7 on your IELTS Writing Exam.

ielts writing difference 6 7

Lindsay and I are in constant communication with our students in 3 Keys IELTS, and we listen to needs that arise. Recently, we’ve added some extra bonuses to the course to address some anxieties.

One of these has to do with the computer based UKVI IELTS Exam.

This is a new form of IELTS, so our course is one of the only ones that addresses this.

The first important thing to know is that every test center that offers the computer IELTS also offers the paper based version. Secondly, this option is only for certain visas for the UK.

The major difference in strategies is that you cannot physically underline keywords.

Another difference is that there is a tool where you can take notes on the Reading Exam. Don’t take notes! This tool is a waste of time.

Another tool which actually is handy is the option to highlight sections of the Reading Passage. This is convenient for when you find a keyword in the text. You can highlight the sentence containing the word, and easily compare it to the question.

The long and short of it is that, for most people, you don’t have to worry about IELTS switching over to the computer based version anytime soon, so focus on the strategies set out for the paper based version and don’t get distracted by this other option.

However, one of our students was panicked about this, and I created a bonus about specialized strategies for the UKVI version of IELTS and put it in the course within a week. It’s available now!

Another particularly advantageous feature of our course is the detailed, clear explanation of what the writing scores mean. We tell you what a 5, 6, 7 and 8 means on the IELTS Writing and Speaking Exams.

We’ve recently updated these descriptions to include more details about the General IELTS Exam, and what the examiner looks for to give you scores in this case.

Get a High Score in IELTS Writing

  • Academic

In order to get a 7, you have to include only the most important numbers that support a clear overall trend.

  • General

To get a 7 in this letter, you must cover all the bullet points in a clear, detailed, balanced way.

In our teaching methodology, we believe that isolating the skills is key. You must practice each skill individually before you can combine them into a cohesive test strategy and tackle real IELTS test practice.

For example, in this episode, we share reading activities to strengthen necessary reading skills.

The fact is, you can’t just do practice tests and improve. That’s impossible. So, for writing, you need to know exactly what the examiner is looking for in writing as far as Task, Cohesion/Coherence, Vocabulary and Grammar. You must isolate each skill, strengthen it, then apply it to an essay.

Our strategies and learning techniques work, as you can see in our many students who have received a 9 on the Reading Exam!
