IELTS Energy 350: How Accent Affects Your IELTS Speaking Score

Today we answer a very interesting question about how your accent affects your IELTS Speaking score.accent affects ielts speaking score

A wonderful 3 Keys student asked this question in our closed Facebook group:

I’ve been working on so-called accent reduction with italki teachers to sound more like a native. I understand that IELTS wouldn’t criticize accent too much as long as candidates are understood, but isn’t it better if we can speak with a native accent? And, isn’t it impressive for examiners to hear us with a native accent? This is my question, as I’ve been working on this for a really long time and it doesn’t seem to improve. I’m wondering if we can reduce our accent as an adult.

IELTS Pronunciation Scores

The fact is, you can score an 8 and still have a slight first-language accent.

Think about it- even as native English speakers, we all have very different accents.

Your IELTS Pronunciation score is based on two things:

  • Being understood by the examiner. Again, you can still have an accent.
    • The only way this affects your score is if your accent prevents you from saying the English sounds correctly, such as ‘th’.
    • Also, make sure that you are pronouncing the final consonants correctly. You can do this by focusing on specific sound problems and read out loud every day.
