The element of honesty plays a big part in increasing your Fluency, Vocabulary and Pronunciation scores on the IELTS Speaking Exam.

Recently, a native speaker took the exam, and approached his spoken answers with open and quick honesty.

This is likened to narrating what is happening in your head. This is communication! Strong, clear and fluent.

On the exam, in Speaking Part 2, he was asked to describe an advertisement.

He introduced his answer like this:

[Sigh] Gosh, you know, to be honest I really despise advertisements. I really don’t like advertisements. I avoid them at all costs, so, when I saw this topic, I was a little bit befuddled at first as to what I was gonna talk about.”

*’Befuddled‘ means confused. You could also say ‘mind-boggled.’

Firstly, think about how much time this honest, personal narration took up of the two minutes.

Not only that, but it shows amazing intonation as you honestly express your feelings. It also shows great vocabulary as you describe these feelings in detail.

Most importantly, however, is the fluency. Talking like this shows that you can talk through any situation.

You have to break away from the idea that doing well on the IELTS exam means working in an academic word here or there, or that you must be strict, serious and formal all the time.

None of that will get you that 7+!
