The IELTS is made by a British company and an Australian company so does that mean that you need to use British slang on the test?

It is a great question and we’ll answer it today so that you can be ready for test day!

A listener asked:

“Thank you so much for the tips. I have been listening for just a few days and will keep doing so because your podcast is amazing. As the IELTS is more British than American can we use any type of slang or idiom? Do you suggest that I stick to the British ones?”

Our answer:

You can use slang from any country.

As long as it’s correct in the country that it’s from.

You need to focus on fulfilling what the examiner is looking for.

The examiner wants slang and idiomatic range and the vocabulary choices need to be made at the right times and in the right parts of the test.

It’s not about what country the slang comes from!

In our course we provide suggestions on places to go online to get practice with different accents from Australia, England, New Zealand, and the United States.
