build confidence before speaking exam

Anxiety is one of the biggest killers of IELTS Speaking scores. That’s why we have a whole Anti-anxiety Module in our course!

No matter how much you’ve prepared and practiced, it can be difficult to control your nerves and worried mind before going in to face the examiner.

Don’t let all your hard work go to waste!

With these tips, you can control your nerves and grow more confident and energized before you face the IELTS examiner.

1. Know when to show up

Firstly, make sure you find out if you should show up early.

At most test centers, you can do your Speaking Exam up to an hour before you are scheduled.

Impress the examiner by showing initiative and being there early!

2. Take a walk

Get some oxygen into your brain and release stress. This not only calms you down, but it also energizes you.

Plan a 20 minute route around the test center before exam day.

Depending on your personality, or how you feel that day, you can listen to music or just enjoy the city sounds.

3. Practice exam questions

Ask a friend to meet you at the center, or ask another candidate to practice with you.

The point of this activity is to release stress and build confidence.

So, while you are providing your answers, laugh! Make jokes! Take the anxiety out of the situation.

Control your fear by overcoming it.

4. Listen to a power song

Listen to a song right before your interview that really gets you energized and feeling confident, ready to take on the world.

For me, depending on my mood, I would choose Led Zeppelin, a House music track from Mark Farina, or an old Punk rock song from Sublime.

Then rock your exam!
