Perhaps you’ve learned an outline for an organized essay. This will aid you in scoring well in Coherence / Cohesion.

You have probably also learned academic linking words, which will help in that category as well.

Maybe you’ve also made long lists of impressive words and phrases, and told yourself that you need to memorize them.

However, you still cannot receive the score you need on the IELTS Writing Exam.

Try incorporating the following advice into your practice, and watch your scores skyrocket!

  • Get Impressive Vocabulary, and Use It
    • Read the newspaper in English at least twice a week. However, only add a total of 4 words to your notebook every time you read it.
    • Only choose words that are very impressive. Also, try to only write down words and phrases that could apply to many different topics.
    • Keep this Task 2 list in front of you when you write your essay, and put check marks next to the words that you are able to use.
    • Practice using these words in your writing and speaking as much as possible.

  • Broaden Your Awareness
    • We always say that IELTS does not care about your ideas. That does not mean you can have inappropriate or illogical ideas!
    • Reading the news, listening to a wide variety of podcasts, and watching a range of TV shows and movies will add to your understanding of the world- in English!
    • Strong, specific ideas that directly support opinions and reasons cause your Task Response score to be higher.
